About Us

History of the Organization

Madras Social Service Society (MSSS), the official organ for social work in the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore, registered under the Societies Registration Act on 3rd July 1969, works for the development of the poor and marginalized in Chennai and Tiruvallur Districts of Tamilnadu.

Origin :

3rd July 1969, MSSS was officially registered as a Society under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 (Central Act). Reg. No.183 / 1969 by Fr Mc Ferran with the guidance of Most Rev Dr Louis Mathias DD.

History :

From 1969 to 1987 the Charitable and the Welfare Programmes such as food aid, infrastructures, Mother & Child health programmes were undertaken for the poor people of Chennai, Thiruvellore, Chingleput and Kanchipuram Districts.

From 1987 to 1990, Community Developmental Programmes such as education to the focus groups, organising the focus groups, thrift & savings and income generation programmes were organised.

From 1998 onwards, Right based Developmental activities were done through SHGs and MSSS was selected as one of the NGO by the Govt of TN. – From 2016 onwards, Developmental activities through inclusion of all were undertaken strengthening the SHGs by networking and advocacy.

MSSS celebrates this year Golden Jubilee Celebration in working for the marginalised and deprived classes of the society to make them empowered.

“Creation of a just Society” means an equitable society wherein all people live with dignity and equality and realization of human rights, justice and solidarity.

Our Mission :

“Empowering the powerless” through mobilization, negotiations, networking, lobbying and advocacy with greater commitment, cooperation and coordination with competent socially spirited organizations and powerless people realization of human rights.

Our Focus Areas :

Chennai District - Coastal Area of Chennai - Chennai Slums - Sub-urban of Chennai - Thiruvallur District Rural Areas & Special Towns.

Our Focus People :

Fisher Men & Women - Slum dwellers - Migrant Workers & their families - Farmers & Collies - Dalits & Tribal - Disabled Adults and Children
